Abstract
Orange wheat blossom midge, Sitodiplosis mosellana , also known as wheat midge, is an economic pest of wheat. Short-lived adults lay eggs on developing wheat heads and the emerging larvae feed on the developing kernels, resulting in diminished quantity and quality of the grain. Scouting, predictive models, and wheat midge-tolerant wheat varieties help prevent yield losses, but biological control is an important part of integrated pest management programmes for wheat midge. The parasitoid Macroglenes penetrans was likely introduced into Canada along with wheat midge and parasitism rates can be quite high. This chapter reviews the biology and impact of M. penetrans , the natural enemy complex of wheat midge in Canada and globally, and provides recommendations for future research on biological control agents of wheat midge, including conservation of parasitoids and generalist predators.
