Abstract
The varroa mite, Varroa destructor , is a serious threat to the health of the European honey bee, Apis mellifera . In Canada, the varroa mite commonly causes honey bee colony losses and decreases honey yields. There is a need for integrated pest management strategies for varroa mites, because chemical acaricides (both conventional and ‘soft’) can contaminate hive products, negatively affect honey bee health, or fail to manage varroa mite infestations due to resistance. Some potential biological control agents of V. destructor have been identified; however, biological control is challenging because of the close association between varroa mites and their honey bee hosts. Research in Canada investigating the efficacy and practicality of biological control of varroa mites using entomopathogenic fungi and predators is reviewed.
