Urban forests are novel ecosystems where a mix of native and non-native plants and animals without evolutionary relationships coexist. Urban forests are beneficial to city dwellers but pose unique challenges to pest management. These ecologically simplified forests are vulnerable to pests, but the responsibility for urban forests can be complex due to land ownership issues, the inherent value of individual trees to landowners, and public opinion surrounding the method of pest management. Biological control is an important approach to pest management in urban forests. This chapter reviews Canadian examples of pest management in urban forests using biological control for a diversity of forest pests.
