Abstract
The bertha armyworm, Mamestra configurata , is an important pest of canola, Brassica napus and Brassica rapa , in western Canada. The population tends to outbreak every 6–8 years and the ends of outbreaks are generally associated with epizootics of baculovirus and entomopathogenic fungi. In recent years, progress has been made to characterize the alphabaculoviruses associated with M. configurata populations and is reviewed in the chapter. In particular, the role of the PIF complex of the alphabaculoviruses is a factor that determines host range. Interactions of alphabaculoviruses with parasitoids is also reviewed in the chapter and recommendations for future research are noted.
