The mountain pine beetle, Dendroctonus ponderosae , is native to North America. Its hosts include several species of pine. During outbreaks, D. ponderosae can kill significant numbers of trees, resulting in decreased timber production, increased fire risk, and impacts on biodiversity in affected forest stands. Since 1999, the distribution of D. ponderosae has expanded northwards in British Columbia and into northern Alberta, Canada. Beauveria bassiana may be a good candidate for biological control of D. ponderosae . In particular, the entomopathogen successfully infected mountain pine beetle in laboratory studies and recent research has focused on identifying strains of the pathogen with virulence against mountain pine beetle. Testing to select strains for use in a biological control programme for mountain pine beetle is described and the next steps in developing a biological control programme are reviewed.
