Abstract
Rhaponticum repens , Russian knapweed, was likely introduced to North America as a contaminant of forage seed and is a noxious weed in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Ontario, Canada. Rhaponticum repens has a competitive advantage over native plants in its introduced range where it has negative impacts on native and crop plants in its invaded range. Eight species have been assessed for use in an R. repens biological control programme, including pathogens, insects, and a mite species. Investigation of these agents is reviewed, as well as the release and post-release monitoring of biological control agents released in Canada so far, including Aceria acroptilonica and Jaapiella ivannikovi . Finally, priorities for future research are identified.
