This chapter discusses the increasingly evident toll of the climate crisis in terms of the prospects of civilizational collapse. It examines the rapidity of change, collapse scenarios currently permeating the literature and popular culture, and pathways to avoid them. A new interdisciplinary discipline investigating the origins, process and prospects of climate change-induced human systems collapse is emerging. We cannot understand the links explored between climate and human health in the present volume without a conceptual understanding of the threat of socio-ecological system collapse which is constantly lurking in the background of climate science, advocacy, diplomacy, art and other forms of human action and expression. Collapse is not precise; it is more helpful to think in terms of degrees of collapse based on human perceptions, in addition to the very real ecosystem collapse that is emerging. The chapter also discusses some political currents impacted by, and impacting, collapse discourses.
