Abstract
A tanulmány röviden összegzi Madách Imre Az ember tragédiája mai közismert szövegének keletkezési előzményeit és körülményeit a művet elméletileg megalapozó, Madách által írt Művészeti értekezéstől a kritikai kiadásig. E korai pályázati munkájában Madách az erkölcsi elvet nevezte meg a dráma fő mozgatójának, s a tanulmány megerősíti e mű és Immanuel Kant etikai gondolatainak a Tragédiában fellelhető kibontását. A szerző szerint a dráma szövegén történt, szándék szerint stilisztikai javítások több ponton elhomályosították ezeket a filozófiai gyökereket, felsértve a dráma gondolati ívét. Az elemzés feltárja a kézirattól a kiadásig végbement szövegváltozások személyes és történelmi hátterét, majd utolsó fejezetében felsorolja a tartalmat és a szövegösszefüggéseket módosító javításokat, összevetve őket az eredeti szöveg fogalmi világával. Az elemzés következtetése, hogy az Arany János által elvégzett stilisztikai javítások meghagyása mellett érdemes a dráma oktatásakor, elemzésekor, fordításakor és előadásakor figyelembe venni a tanulmányban bemutatott eredeti szövegváltozat sorait és kifejezéseit.
