“Many Who Came Here Suffered, But I Did Too”: Examining Defense Narratives and Inter-Perpetrator Dynamics of Genocide Perpetrators in Northwest Bosnia

Abstract
This article investigates the defense strategies and inter-perpetrator relationships among those accused of genocide in Northwest Bosnia, particularly within the Prijedor municipality. It scrutinizes the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY) trials of Duško Tadić, Miroslav Kvočka, and Milomir Stakić, focusing on their self-defense narratives and their interactions within local and broader socio-political frameworks. The analysis reveals that the internal dynamics among the perpetrators in Prijedor were characterized by complex power hierarchies that shaped their participation in genocidal acts. By applying criminological theories to a detailed qualitative analysis of trial transcripts and public statements, this study exposes defense narratives as integrally connected to the perpetrators’ self-image and ethical justifications. This research enhances our understanding of how localized leadership and individual decision-making within specific power structures critically impact the commission of war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide.
