Abstract
Dès ses débuts, l’anthropologie s’est intéressée aux sacrifices dans les sociétés anciennes (Grèce, Inde, Rome, Moyen-Orient), ainsi que dans des sociétés à tradition orale, en particulier africaines, à partir des textes fondateurs des religions antiques ou les récits des voyageurs découvrant les pratiques des « indigènes ». Si des sacrifices étaient autrefois pratiqués par les trois religions monothéistes, seule la religion musulmane a conservé divers rites sacrificiels, individuels ou collectifs. Le plus emblématique, l’ayd al-kabîr (Grande fête) ou ayd al-adha (Fête du sacrifice), renouvellement du sacrifice ibrahîmien et de celui du Prophète fondateur de l’islam, inclus dans le pèlerinage à la Mecque, est effectué par l’ensemble des familles musulmanes, rurales et urbaines, y compris de façon nouvelle (par procuration ou délégation) par celles immigrées dans les pays occidentaux.
