Parmi les administrations, la diplomatie occupe une place à part : via les ambassades, elle doit représenter son pays sur un territoire étranger. Cela suppose de répondre aux lieux concernés, tout en symbolisant avec pertinence l’identité française. Ainsi, le programme requiert un certain sens de l’équilibrisme : d’un côté, la nécessité de prendre en compte un contexte singulier ; de l’autre, quelle image la France souhaite-t-elle y donner d’elle-même ? Les ambassades constituant en fait un équipement assez récent dans l’histoire créative, les architectes choisis par le Quai d’Orsay pour ces chantiers hautement représentatifs ont dû trouver eux-mêmes un équilibre entre les coutumes du métier diplomatique et les changements socioculturels de leur temps. Aussi, quatre exemples d’ambassades clés sous-tendent ce texte, dévoilant deux stratégies diplomatiques et culturelles distinctes. Durant l’entre-deux-guerres, celles de Belgrade et d’Ottawa témoignaient de l’affirmation du genre architectural diplomatique, conservant surtout des référents traditionnels français mais sachant les moderniser avec tact. Après le second conflit mondial, celles de Varsovie et de Washington ont poursuivi avec plus d’énergie encore cette volonté de représenter la France avec des édifices à la pointe de la modernité internationale. En cela, grâce à l’architecture, la diplomatie française a su rappeler combien le pays était au cœur des recherches novatrices, utilisant ces édifices comme un support explicite de cette créativité contemporaine, significative d’une nation dynamique.
