Abstract
In reaction to the externalsociological approaches, which focus on the production, reception, and effects of translated texts; in reaction to the increasingly metaphorical uses of the concept of ‘translation’, Sociocriticism seeks to return to textuality, to the ‘inside’ of the translated text in order to explore its relationships with social discourse, that which is communicated in a given state of society. This socio-semiotic theory emerged in France in the 1970s within the field of literature (Duchet 1970). Its extension to Translation Studies occurred in Canada two decades later (Brisset 1996 [1990]). The study provides an overview of the historical foundations of the sociocritical framework, from genetic criticism and cultural semiotics to the epistemological rupture in Critical Translation Studies operated by Toury’s descriptive and target-oriented model. Operational concepts of Sociocriticism such as ‘social discourse,’ ‘ideologeme,’ or ‘sociogram’ are explained and applied to the analysis of translations belonging to various genres, fields (social systems), and time periods.
