En 1928, le thème choisi pour le défilé traditionnel de la Saint-Jean-Baptiste à Montréal est « Nos chansons populaires ». La parade comporte une trentaine de chars allégoriques présentant des tableaux vivants illustrant le répertoire musical folklorique canadien-français. La veille du défilé, cependant, la ville déborde d’événements musicaux étroitement liés aux circuits de divertissement américains, incluant des films muets, des spectacles de vaudeville et des comédies musicales. Comment alors réconcilier ce samedi soir de divertissements et le défilé du dimanche qui visait à préserver une identité canadienne-française distinctive en contrant la mauvaise influence présumée du monde anglophone et des États-Unis ? Dans le présent article, je soutiens que le défilé permet d’envisager la chanson traditionnelle non pas comme une relique culturelle destinée à disparaître avec la modernité, mais plutôt comme un élément essentiel pour créer une modernité distinctement canadienne-française. J’interprète notamment la mise en scène du folklore dans le contexte du défilé par le prisme du mouvement régionaliste contemporain dans la littérature et les arts visuels et j’avance que la parade est une expression sonore et performative de ce mouvement.
