This article presents a single-phase common-ground coupled inductor-based nonisolated inverter with a voltage boost in a single stage. The proposed inverter can also do buck (step-down) operation. The common ground nature of the proposed inverter eliminates leakage current flow between the source and the load. Leakage current flow in converters increases current and voltage harmonics, electromagnetic noise, safety concerns, and reduces efficiency. The proposed inverter adopts a lower number of components, contributing to reducing cost, and providing a compact design. Twomosfetswitches operate at the line frequency of 60 Hz, reducing the total switching losses. Only one high-frequency switch operates in both half cycles of the output voltage. There are fewer components in a conduction loop, reducing overall power losses and improving efficiency. The voltage boost, common ground, and lesser components features make the proposed inverter appropriate for renewable energy applications such as PV-grid-connected systems which generate power at low voltages. The inverter's intricate modes, operational principles, pulsewidth modulated strategy, and power loss breakdown are elucidated. With a 50-kHz switching frequency and an input dc voltage of 50 V, an output voltage of 110 Vrms is obtained. Experiments were carried out on a 400 W laboratory prototype. Results obtained from the experiments affirm the effectiveness of the proposed inverter.
