L’autonomisation des modes d’accès, de production et de diffusion des images par les jeunes eux-mêmes force les professionnels de l’éducation populaire, dans une association telle que la Ligue de l’enseignement, à reconfigurer l’activité pédagogique jusque dans ses convictions. Ils ont progressivement incorporé les formats institutionnels de l’éducation à l’image ; la promotion du cinéma d’auteur par le rituel de la salle, et ses rapports sous-jacents à la jeunesse ; et la disqualification des pratiques ordinaires au profit de l’Art. Ce socle normatif est remis en question au moyen d’une ethnographie de longue durée qui révèle une montée critique de ces normes et pratiques dominantes. L’article étudie ainsi tant la perte que la nécessité d’une réactualisation des pratiques de l’éducation populaire au sein d’une de ses plus anciennes associations. Cette visée paradoxale met en évidence que les mutations technoculturelles, loin d’induire de « nouvelles » éducations à l’image, remettent sur le devant de la scène une praxis oubliée.
