Abstract
Considering the effect of the water surrounding the hull on the ship structural dynamics is crucial in vibration analyses. This paper presents the results from different methods used to calculate added mass and compare the simulations results against experimental data. We used a scaled Post-Panamax bulk carrier model as a case study and calculated the wet natural frequencies using numerical and analytical methods. In particular, we performed structural dynamic simulations implementing two numerical methods, i.e. coupled Boundary Element (BE) and Finite Element (FE) analysis in MSC NASTRAN and vibroacoustic analysis in MSC ACTRAN. In addition, we calculated the wet natural frequencies of the model implementing the analytical formulation by Lewis. Resistance tests were performed at the National Research Council of Canada’s towing tank, and during the tests we performed an experimental Operational Deflection Shape (ODS) analysis. The data from the ODS were used to validate the results from the numerical simulations. The results highlight the accuracy and viability of the tested methods.
