À partir des propos de Sébastien Dupont situant le sentiment de solitude comme un idiome de détresse lié au principe d’individualisation de notre culture occidentale, les auteurs s’interrogent sur la fréquence de ce sentiment dans une culture qui n’a jamais donné autant de moyens pour ne pas être seul. L’article retrace quelques traits de notre culture individualisante afin de mieux les appréhender comme conditions du déploiement de cette souffrance. Ils reprennent la phrase de Marcel Gauchet : l’individu contemporain est un être symboliquement et cognitivement déconnecté du Tout. Ils décrivent ensuite un atelier métaphorique pratiqué avec un groupe de patients sur le thème de la tente canadienne comme image de la condition humaine. Cette participation à cette métaphore est vue comme une expérience d’être habité par une représentation d’un tout comme moyen de gérer la souffrance associée à ce sentiment de solitude.
