Abstract
Historically, young adults are less likely to participate in election campaigns. Digital media were expected to change these patterns. As election campaigns became more digital and used social media, young adults’ mobilization was expected to increase. In this chapter, we examine youth’s electoral participation in terms of life cycle versus generational effects, changing citizenship norms, preference for online expressive activities, and the role of campaigns in soliciting participation and addressing issues of particular interest to youth. We present data about age differences in relation to eight online/offline campaign activities gathered in the context of the 2019 Canadian and British elections, the 2020 U.S. presidential election, and the 2022 French presidential election. We find evidence of an Obama generation – a group of U.S. respondents who came of age during the Obama campaigns and continued to be highly engaged in online political activities.
