Abstract
Thomas Chapais (1858-1946) est l’un des premiers historiens canadiens-français à consacrer une partie de ses écrits et discours à des réflexions sur les formes que peut prendre l’écriture de l’histoire. À une époque où sa notoriété est déjà bien établie, il élabore une réflexion originale sur le cadre monographique et le cadre synthétique en s’inscrivant explicitement dans une conception littéraire et poétique de l’histoire. À la base de ces idées sur la forme, on retrouve deux approches de l’histoire relevant d’un même mode d’enquête mais utilisant des focales d’observation différentes : la grande histoire et la petite histoire. En amont de cette réflexion, Chapais a tenté de résoudre la tension entre « impartialité » et « impassibilité ». Cette opération lui permet d’élaborer sa conception de l’historien idéal, soucieux à la fois de la vérité historique, de l’attachement à une réalité nationale et de l’importance du style dans l’écriture.
