Abstract
Le Canada français semble faire preuve, durant l’entre-deux-guerres, d’un désintérêt généralisé pour la paix et le pacifisme et se place ainsi à contre-courant de la majeure partie du monde occidental. Cet article porte son attention sur la production écrite de l’École sociale populaire (ESP), prolifique organisme jésuite montréalais de propagande sociale, au sujet de la paix internationale. Il ressort de notre analyse que le pacifisme de l’entre-deux-guerres suscite la méfiance du clergé canadien-français en raison de son caractère laïc, interconfessionnel et de tendance socialiste. Les Jésuites de l’ESP y opposent un discours de paix radicalement différent de celui qui a cours au même moment en Europe, et notamment en France : de nature spirituelle, voire éthérée, prônant la réforme des mœurs sur la réforme des structures, il laisse à d’autres la tâche complexe de la mise en application. La paix canadienne-française catholique s’oppose au désordre bien plus qu’à la guerre, et peu importe l’échelle (individuelle ou internationale), elle est sociale avant d’être politique.
