Abstract
The purpose of this chapter is to describe and interpret the socialization of Qiqiqtamiut Inuit (Eskimo) children on matters of kinship. The term ‘socialization’ conventionally refers to situations in which adults teach children how to relate to others in socially established ways. For present purposes I will use the term to refer to three related processes: (1) the manner in which members of a society become familiar with a lexicon of terms for relatedness; (2) the way the meanings embodied in that lexicon are explicated; and (3) the way members contrive to couple labels and meanings with implied actions in order to motivate events in the world. This rather refractory definition points to the three areas I want to focus on descriptively; and it neutralizes the issue of the degree of maturity of both the eacher and the learner in the socialization process. This latter strategy is made necessary by Inuit views on the matter, some of the implications of which will be explored here as well.
