Abstract
Cette enquête montre à travers les lettres de Marie de l’Incarnation comment s’exprime l’idée même de liberté, une notion qui évolue au contact des femmes autochtones et de sa compagne laïque et rebelle Mme de la Peltrie. Autant dans sa correspondance que dans ses écrits spirituels, l’ursuline reste une figure éminemment paradoxale, déchirée entre son voeu d’obéissance et d’effacement, sa volonté de défendre sa communauté contre le pouvoir tyrannique des autorités ecclésiales et son désir d’affranchissement. La lettre, dialogue différé du domaine privé, devient le médium privilégié d’une agentivité féminine qui permet à la rédactrice d’échapper au joug clérical et de chercher à prendre sa place dans l’histoire coloniale.
