Il ne fait aucun doute que la conception que l’on se fait aujourd’hui de la religion, comme d’une foi ( pistis ) en un Dieu transcendant, est fortement marquée par la métaphysique dans le creuset de laquelle ont été développées des notions comme celles de pistis et d’une réalité transcendante, éternelle et spirituelle, donc non sensible. On peut dire de cette conception qu’elle vient du platonisme. Il y a ainsi eu – historiquement, conceptuellement et dans la religion telle qu’elle se comprend souvent elle-même – une fusion des horizons de la religion et de la métaphysique. Est-ce que cette fusion est heureuse ou malheureuse ? Doit-elle être surmontée ? Peut-elle l’être ? Laisse-t-elle de côté des aspects essentiels de la religion qui seraient étrangers à la métaphysique ? Cet essai aimerait aborder, à grands traits pour le bien de la discussion, ces grandes questions en rappelant quelques distinctions élémentaires que l’on peut faire entre la religion et la métaphysique et les raisons de leur fusion historique.
