Abstract
Among some of the most renowned paintings in the National Gallery of Canada's collection are the so-called Liechtenstein purchases.After the Second World War, over the short span of half a decade, the Gallery made twelve important acquisitions from the Princely Collections of Liechtenstein.Through persistent negotiations with Prince Franz Josef II, the Gallery enriched its Old Master holdings with works by Rembrandt, Rubens, Memling, Chardin and others as part of their quest to cement the National Gallery of Canada as a major North American museum.
