Abstract
This article presents two activist communication practices that can contribute to confronting the current ecological crisis: independent environmental journalism and indigenous ethnomedia. The objective is to identify convergences between the two regarding the potential to trigger narratives in favor of social transformation. To this end, we operationalize, among others, the concepts of environmental justice, slow violence, environmentalism of the poor, symbolic violence and counter-hegemonic narratives. We conclude that independent environmental journalism and indigenous ethnomedia bring important elements of criticism ignored by the mainstream media, in addition to directly dialoguing with vulnerable populations that directly suffer the impacts of environmental damage.
