Abstract

The consumer demand for good quality and safe food with a higher shelf life has encouraged the development of modern packaging technology called active packaging. Active packaging is designed to enhance the shelf life and overall quality of packaged food by incorporating active ingredients into the packaging, allowing the release of active agents and/or absorption of undesirable substances from the packaging environment. Active packaging consists of two types: active releasing/emitting systems and active absorbing/scavenging systems. Despite ongoing research on active food packaging, the commercialization of such packaging technology is limited. This chapter offers an overview of active packaging technologies. Of which includes emitter-based systems, such as antimicrobial, antioxidant, carbon dioxide system, and absorber-based systems, such as oxygen, moisture, or ethylene systems, alongside many scientific publications highlighting the advantages of these systems for particular food items.
