Abstract
The study analyses the role that intercultural competence plays in enabling a sustainable management ofabsenteeism among locally recruited staff working for a mining company in Burkina Faso. The findingsshow that managers’ mobilisation of intercultural competence helps to transcend the binary logic ofopposing economic vs. ethical responsibility, thereby instrumentalising CSR as a profit-maximisationstrategy without obviating the socio-economic needs of populations living in the vicinity of these miningsites. The end result is a management style where sanctions and/or the threat of being fired no longerconstitute the main tools that companies use to curb local employee absenteeism.
