Abstract
Les Essais façonnent un art de l’amitié inséparable d’une certaine forme d’écriture et de modernité. Il appelle en effet à tempérer la radicalité des appartenances politiques et religieuses. Aimer l’autre comme soi-même, c’est distinguer les dérives violentes des communautarismes d’une relation intersubjective salutaire. À travers la figure de l’ami de prédilection, Étienne de La Boétie, Montaigne peut voir se révéler en lui « la forme entière de l’humaine condition ». À la parole unificatrice de l’amitié succède le deuil de l’autre et le temps de l’écriture. Cependant, avec lui, la relecture de l’histoire collective et individuelle dévoile une « arrière-boutique », la poétique irréductible d’un « je » protéiforme et dialogique capable de résister à la « servitude volontaire » mais aussi à tout scepticisme de l’autre : non plus un ami exclusif, mais des amis, un corps social et utopique.
