Abstract
Current Opinion in Clinical Nutrition and Metabolic Care was launched in 1998. It is one of a successful series of review journals whose unique format is designed to provide a systematic and critical assessment of the literature as presented in the many primary journals. The fields of clinical nutrition and metabolic care are divided into 15 sections that are reviewed once a year. Each section is assigned a Section Editor, a leading authority in the area, who identifies the most important topics at that time. Here we are pleased to introduce the Section Editors for this issue. SECTION EDITORS Carla PradoCarla PradoCarla Prado (PhD, Registered Dietitian) is a Professor at the University of Alberta, Canada, and a Canada Research Chair in Integrative Nutrition, Body Composition, and Energy Metabolism (Tier 1). She is also the director of the Human Nutrition Research Unit, the best facility in Canada, and one of the top facilities worldwide for body composition and energy metabolism assessments. Dr Prado is an expert in assessing nutritional status through the precise measurement of body composition and energy metabolism. Her research is dedicated to exploring the prevalence and clinical implications of sarcopenic obesity (concurrent appearance of low muscle and high fat) in several conditions, particularly cancer. The focus of her current research program is to develop targeted nutrition interventions for the prevention and treatment of low muscle mass and sarcopenic obesity in patients with diverse conditions. She is currently the principal investigator of five randomized controlled trials investigating the impact of nutrition intervention on body composition and health. Dr Prado is a past recipient of Canada's Top 40 Under 40, an award that celebrates exceptional young Canadian leaders of all sectors and has recently received the title of Most Powerful Women in Canada: Top 100. Dr Prado has been inducted into the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences and the Royal Society of Canada College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists, two of the highest academic honors in her country. She is also an Associate Editor for Clinical Nutrition and the Journal of Cachexia, Sarcopenia and Muscle. Philip AthertonPhilip AthertonProf. Philip J Atherton is Chair of Molecular Medicine at the University of Nottingham, UK. Following a PhD in 2005, and BBSRC funded postdoc in 2007, he was awarded a personal Research Councils UK fellowship in 2009, before being promoted to associate and then full professor in 2017, with a diverse portfolio of physiology, metabolism, and endocrinology research. Prof. Atherton has been principal/co-investigator on grants to the tune of ∼£15 M from UK research councils, charities, industry, and EU sources. Prof. Atherton has published more than 250 peer-reviewed articles (H-index of 67; >21,000 citations) and 7 invited book(s) chapters. He is a current member of the Medical Research Council (MRC) Populations & Systems Medicine Board (PSMB) and founding editor-in-chief of Physiologia. Karin AmreinKarin AmreinKarin Amrein, MD, MSc trained at the Medical University of Graz, Austria, including one Erasmus semester in Cagliari, Italy, graduating in 2001 as the youngest MD in Austria aged 21. Following this, Dr Amrein started training in general internal medicine in Switzerland. In 2006, she made a detour to transfusion medicine at the Medical University of Graz, Austria, and developed an interest in clinical research, studying the effects of apheresis on bone health of blood donors. In 2008, Dr Amrein moved to the Division of Endocrinology and was involved in several ICU trials on glycemic control. She now works as an internist and has a subspecialty degree in intensive care medicine and endocrinology/ metabolism. Dr Amrein is the chief investigator for the VITDALIZE Study: Effect of High-dose Vitamin D3 on 28-day Mortality in Adult Critically Ill Patients (VITDALIZE), that now also recruits in several European countries including Germany, Belgium and the United Kingdom. Her research interests are vitamin D in critical illness, hypoparathyroidism, bone metabolism in critical care and other settings, and donor health, specifically donation induced iron depletion (and its therapy) and the effects of apheresis on bone health. Manfred EggersdorferManfred EggersdorferDr Manfred Eggersdorfer is Professor em. for Healthy Ageing at the University Medical Center Groningen (Netherlands) and teaches nutrition for medical students. His scientific work focuses on the role of essential nutrients for health, vitality, and well-being, especially on the impact of inadequate intake and status of micronutrients over the life cycle with a focus on long term health and healthy ageing. Currently he acts as Board member of the Gesellschaft für Angewandte Vitaminforschung e.V in Germany. He is an Honorary Member of The Oxygen Club of California, and affiliate of various other organisations. He is author of numerous publications in the fields of vitamins, carotenoids, omega-3-polyunsaturated fatty acids for infants, adults, elderly, and risk groups and on innovation in nutritional ingredients.
