This chapter will describe the nuclear power reactor designs that are currently in use. These reactors include light water designs, developed primarily in the United States, which utilize both boiling water and pressurized water as moderator and coolant. The gas-cooled graphite-moderated reactors that were developed in the United Kingdom and water-cooled graphite-moderated reactors that were developed in the Soviet Union, as well as heavy water-moderated reactors, such as the CANDU reactor developed in Canada, are also included. The growth of the nuclear power industry from the late-1950s to present is discussed, with particular emphasis on the effects of nuclear accidents on the development of new power reactors. The longevity of the use of nuclear power is discussed in the context of uranium and thorium resources, along with the possibility of fuel reprocessing.
