Generation IV sodium-cooled fast reactors (SFRs) will be discussed in this chapter. SFRs have a long history of development, dating back to the late-1950s. In fact, nearly 20 operational reactors have been constructed, which makes SFRs one of the most mature Generation IV technologies. This chapter reviews the general design of an SFR. This is followed by an overview of some of the more notable reactors of this type that have been operational in the past. The operation of these reactors is analyzed to understand the challenges that face the construction of a viable Generation IV reactor. Specifically, the reactivity of liquid sodium and the positive void coefficient that is characteristic of these reactors are difficulties that must be considered. This chapter reviews some current Generation IV SFR projects and discusses the ways in which these reactors form an integral part of India’s nuclear energy program.
