Abstract
Very high-temperature reactors (VHTRs) are covered in this chapter. These are thermal neutron reactors that utilize fuel pellets that are temperature stabilized with a ceramic coating. The reactor may have either a prismatic core, where fuel particles are contained in a graphite moderator matrix in the form of fuel pins that are stacked to produce fuel rods, or in the form of fuel pebbles that are used in a pebble bed. The earliest VHTRs date back to the mid-1960s, where both experimental prismatic core and pebble bed reactors were constructed. This chapter reviews high-temperature reactors that have been constructed since that time. These reactors include the two HTR-PM reactors that have been operational in China since 2021 and which represent the world’s first commercial Generation IV reactors. The advantages of VHTRs, including high thermodynamic efficiency and cogeneration opportunities, are discussed in this chapter.
