Abstract
Chapter 10 considers the design of Generation IV gas-cooled fast reactors. In the 1960s and 1970s, several designs were developed in the United States, Europe, and the former Soviet Union for gas-cooled fast reactors but none was ever constructed. These designs are analyzed in the present chapter because they provide insight into the potential difficulties of realizing such a reactor. The major concern in the design of the gas-cooled fast reactor is the low density, and hence low heat capacity, of the coolant. This means that the design of a passive decay heat removal system is a significant challenge. On the positive side, gas-cooled fast reactors have high output temperature, leading to various cogeneration possibilities. In addition, the fuel cycle provides good fuel burn-up, thereby providing good sustainability and minimal radioactive waste. Several Generation IV gas-cooled reactor designs are in progress and representative projects from the European Union and the United States are described in this chapter.

Teacher imitationNot calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. Learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and 10,348 direct Gemma labels. Candidate is the union of thresholded teacher heads; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels or direct frontier model labels.

Machine scores (provisional)
The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.
Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
score_only:v0-immature-baseline · verbatim from the scoring run: score_only means the number may rank works, and no category label ships from itClassification
machine, unvalidatedMachine predicted; both teacher heads agree on what is shown here.
