Abstract
Supercritical water-cooled reactors (SCWRs) are discussed in this chapter, which begins with an overview of the properties of supercritical water and the benefits of utilizing water in this phase for cooling a fission reactor. In the 1950s and 1960s, several projects developed designs for SCWRs, but none was ever constructed. SCWRs have attracted attention as potential Generation IV reactors, largely because of the high enthalpy gain by the coolant in the core along with the lack of a phase transition in the cooling system, which means that reactor designs can be simpler and more economical than those for traditional pressurize water reactors. These reactors may utilize either thermal or fast spectrum neutrons. This chapter reviews some of the Generation IV reactor designs being developed in Canada, Asia, and the European Union.
