Abstract
Chapter 6 discusses the risks associated with nuclear power, including thermal pollution, occupational risks, nuclear accidents, nuclear security, and nuclear waste disposal. The International Nuclear and Radiological Event Scale (INES) is described as a method of categorizing nuclear reactor incidents and accidents. Four major nuclear accidents, i.e., Windscale, Three Mile Island, Chernobyl, and Fukushima, are discussed in detail and an analysis of the events leading to these accidents is presented. This chapter also discusses nuclear security as it relates to the security of nuclear materials, as well as possible attacks on nuclear facilities. Finally, the long-term storage of radioactive waste from nuclear reactors is considered.
