Abstract
Chapter 12 discusses the development of Generation IV lead-cooled fast reactors. The advantages and disadvantages of lead and lead-bismuth eutectic (LBE) as reactor coolants is discussed. Because of the high boiling point of these coolants, the negative void coefficient is not as much of a concern as it is in sodium-cooled reactors. The early history of the use of LBE-cooled reactors for marine use is discussed. The experience gained from these reactors has provided insight into the design of safe Generation IV reactors. This chapter discusses several lead-cooled reactor development projects in Russia, the European Union, and China. Most current developments in this area utilize lead rather than LBE as a coolant in order to avoid potential problems with the build-up of toxic <sup>210</sup>Po in the coolant.
