Abstract
This chapter argues that local histories are significant dramaturgical considerations when staging plays. Using a case study of a production of Bertolt Brecht’s The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui (Der aufhaltsame Aufstieg des Arturo Ui) at Persephone Theatre in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, Peters offers tools dramaturgs can use when exploring and engaging local histories relevant to a particular production of a play, considering especially the play’s themes and a production’s goals. The case study focuses on a lobby display of protest signs used locally. Peters highlights the need to engage with Indigenous peoples when dramaturging work on colonized lands and argues for the value of partnerships with local organizations and communities of various kinds.
