Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

This book provides a study of Indigenous-created comics and graphic novels produced in the US and Canada. Each chapter focuses on a separate genre: superhero stories, science fiction, historical fiction, and experimental narrative. Each chapter explores the way that the authors both employ the conceits of the specific genre while simultaneously employing those conceits to critique the historical and ongoing machinations of settler-colonialism in North America. Simultaneously, the book highlights the various formal and aesthetic choices made by these artists, and the political impact of those choices. The book focuses its attention on a variety of artists, from myriad tribal nations, who reflect the multiple kinds of publication: from self-published with little distribution to national distribution with an established press. As such, this book introduces readers to both the diverse artistry and potent political importance of Indigenous comics and graphic novels. Ultimately, these works serve to remind their readers of the importance of community-based solutions to the various problems generated by settler-colonialism.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
