Abstract
Le présent article corrobore l’hypothèse selon laquelle Francisco de Goya y Lucientes a su voir, à travers l’imaginaire du Nouveau Monde, l’apparition d’un problème d’ordre pictural. Qu’advient-il de la peinture dès lors qu’elle reconnaît l’ailleurs dont elle se sait absente ? Cette expérience de pensée nous est révélée par deux petits tableaux qu’il a peint à l’orée du XIX e siècle et portant des titres qui leur ont été donnés a posteriori : Cannibales montrant des restes humains (1810-1815 ?) et Cannibales préparant leurs victimes (1810-1815 ?). Par l’entremise d’une description rapprochée de leur matérialité et d’une analyse de leurs conditions de possibilité, cet article doit permettre d’extraire ces oeuvres du cadre tautologique à l’intérieur duquel leur fortune critique les a confinés. Goya n’y a pas peint des « sauvages » pour peindre des « sauvages »; il y révèle la logique interne de l’image picturale, à savoir une logique fondamentalement iconophage.
