Abstract
Cet article met en exergue l’importance du jeu de dissimulation exercé par Tennessee Williams dans Soudain l’été dernier pour dépeindre la scène de cannibalisme qui clôture la pièce. La déviance des personnages, qu’elle soit psychologique, morale ou sexuelle, est camouflée par une déviation littéraire par l’utilisation de double articulations métaphoriques, onomastiques et méta-textuelles, entre un articulé, officiel, et un semi-articulé, officieux et difficilement avouable. Entre sabotage sexuel et lâcher-prise artistique, le cannibalisme williamsien est ambivalent du fait de la polarisation de ses images et ses symboles et des dualités que cela génère. L’acte cannibale est un sacrifice et un sacrement, la mère est nourricière et dévoreuse, l’acte homosexuel est ballotté entre tentative d’abjuration et acte de jouissance, entre apostasie et apothéose, une intériorisation psychique aussi bien qu’une extériorisation des pulsions et de la vérité.
