Abstract
Chapter Seven examines the response of rural Scotland to the (figurative) call to arms, and uncovers the ways war changed both farming practices and rural society. The chapter begins with an analysis of war’s effect on the agricultural sector. It covers themes of state intervention, mechanisation, adaptation and resistance. Following this, the chapter examines the ways war reshaped rural populations, bringing a wave of migrant workers. Case studies include: Irish labourers; female workers in the Scottish Women’s Land Army and Scottish Women’s Timber Corps; lumberjacks from Newfoundland, Canada, and British Honduras (now Belize); and prisoners of war from Italy and Germany. The chapter concludes with an assessment of the effect of war on the Scottish rural sector. It also explores the ways war reopened conversations around Highland regeneration and forestry planning, and strategies for Scotland’s post-war prosperity.
