Abstract

fetched live from OpenAlex

Vivek Shraya’s career began with a formative experience in alt publishing: her illustrated book of short stories, God Loves Hair, was originally self-published. Based on Shraya’s “experience growing up in Edmonton [Canada] as a gender non-conforming child of Hindu immigrants,” God Loves Hair is a fascinating alt-kid lit case study on many levels: from its unique publishing history to the object itself, which is part-picture book, part-coming-of-age story—a text that signifies as CYA while dealing with complex and often controversial topics like masturbation, racism, suicidal ideation, religion, and gender identity. In addition to God Loves Hair, Shraya has published two more formally (if not thematically) “traditional” children’s picture books—The Boy & the Bindi (2016) and Revenge of the Raccoons (2022)—and she speaks about the importance of visual elements to her storytelling, as well as the joys, pleasures, and potential political impact of the picture book form and CYA more broadly.

Not calibrated prevalence, not ground truth. Human validation pending. Learned from the 10,348 direct Codex labels and 10,348 direct Gemma labels. Candidate is the union of thresholded teacher heads; consensus is their intersection. These outputs are machine_predicted_unvalidated and are not human labels or direct frontier model labels.

Machine scores (provisional)

The two teacher heads of the student model, read on this work. A score orders the frame for review; it never asserts a category, and the validation status ships verbatim with every row.

Baseline scores from an immature model (maturity gate not passed, 7 training rounds). Scores rank; they never assert a category.
