Abstract
The chapter opens with the 1962 Kentucky Oaks clash between American champion Cicada and Canadian champion Flaming Page. After touching on Cain Hoy Stable's fourth Oaks win with Sally Ship in 1963, the focus turns to Mary Keim, who became the first woman to train a Kentucky Oaks winner when her Amerivan crossed the line first in 1965. A pioneer for women in Thoroughbred racing, Keim gained respect as a horse trainer and used her position to help other women to gain footholds in the sport, including jockey Diane Crump (the first woman to ride in the Kentucky Derby).
