Our history of industrialisation and current consumer economy are using up the Earth's resources faster than they can be replenished and putting pressure on natural systems beyond their capacity to absorb and adapt. The danger of permanently destabilizing the natural systems that support human life and wreaking untold harm to human populations are of course recognised in international treaties, such as the Paris Agreement and the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Protocol, that commit to collectively reduce our impacts and avoid dangerous tipping points.
