Abstract
This chapter recounts the tumultuous events during the height of the Vietnam War, when FBI agents conducted a sweeping search at St. Gregory the Great Roman Catholic Church. It details how Father Phil Berrigan and anti-war activist David Eberhardt evaded arrest after the failed appeals of the “Catonsville Nine” and sought refuge in the rectory under Father Harry Browne's protection. It also mentions how Browne's sanctuary, known for its hidden spaces and protective environment, became a haven for draft dodgers and activists escaping to Canada. Despite Browne's defiant stand against unwarranted intrusion, FBI agents discovered Berrigan and Eberhardt, arresting them amid a community uproar that echoed Browne's impassioned sermon against injustice and war.
