Si la plupart des écrits universitaires sur le travail du care montrent que celui-ci peine à être reconnu socialement et économiquement, les organisations en charge de l’accompagnement à domicile des personnes âgées dépendantes semblent au contraire s’approprier la notion de care dans leurs pratiques et dans leur communication. Cela se traduit par la prescription d’une posture de bienveillance dans le travail des professionnelles de l’aide à domicile, s’inscrivant dans les attentes de la hiérarchie et du public vis-à-vis du savoir-être au travail. Mais au lieu de contribuer à la reconnaissance de la richesse du travail émotionnel des aide-ménagères et des auxiliaires de vie sociale, l’injonction à affirmer exclusivement des émotions positives semble au contraire appauvrir leur activité, en entrant en contradiction avec la nécessité que celles-ci peuvent éprouver à dissimuler leurs affects ou poser leurs limites.
