Abstract

This paper describes the comparative analysis of terms used in karstology in English, French and Croatian. Using the corpus method, co-occurrences of key terms are extracted in order to determine the degree of cross-linguistic equivalence as well as the distribution of certain distinctive features. The results are interpreted with regard to physical-geographical and cultural factors. Unlike a normative terminological description that prescribes exact terminology, this socio-terminological research is primarily descriptive with the aim of understanding the way in which specialized knowledge is structured.
