Abstract
In A Discovery of Strangers, Rudy Wiebe observes to what extent the Canadian North has challenged European vision and rendered its representation frames ineffectual. By undermining the prevalence of the literary over the oral, the unifying worldview of linear perspective, and the discourse of method upon which classical philosophy and rationalism relied, the narrative gradually strips the landscape of the composition lines that traditionally anchored Western representation in time and space. It is then only on a temporary basis that language can engage with the changing, life-sustaining Arctic emerging out of the voices of those who live on the land.
