Comptant parmi les succs les plus immdiats et les plus durables de la littrature mdiolatine, l'Alexandride de Gautier de Chtillon (vers 1171-1181) retrace la vie d'Alexandre le Grand en une pope de quelque 5 500 vers, crite dans les cercles humanistes gravitant autour de Guillaume aux Blanches-Mains (et non des Blanches-Mains , comme le porte une coquille de la p. 2).D. Townsend dite ici, dans la collection d'accs large des Toronto Medieval Latin Texts, un commentaire autonome portant sur les vers 176 274 du livre IV, contenu dans le ms.Londres, British Library, Add.18217, dat de la fin du XIV Rappelons qu'il s'agit des vers clbres qui dcrivent, avec force dtails et effets de rel, le tombeau lev sur ordre d'Alexandre pour la femme de Darius et dcor par Apelle ; le pourtour du tombeau retrace l'histoire sainte depuis la cration du monde, et fait appel une riche iconographie puise dans l'Ancien Testament.L'dition elle-mme (p.25-90) est prcde d'une introduction (p.1-16), d'une bibliographie (p.17-19) et d'une liste de manuscrits relatifs l'Alexandride
