Rotor Stray Currents in Large Salient-Pole Generators

Abstract
In this paper, we present an investigation of the presence and impact of rotor winding stray currents on large salient-pole generators. Field measurements taken on several large hydro-generators suggest that stray currents can have significant impacts on machine sensor operations; they can also lead to incorrect diagnostics and even failures. Moreover, the interpretation of interturn short circuit of the rotor pole winding using airgap flux probes appears not to be sufficiently sensitive to detect rotor pole short turns at this early stage. An explanation of stray current circulation in rotor pole windings during machine operation under interturn short circuit conditions is proposed. Finally, it is shown that rotor stray currents require further investigation and that a better understanding of them could assist in detecting rotor winding short circuits at an early stage and even contains critical information on machine operations. The experimental results presented suggest that our understanding of the impact of overvoltages generated by the excitation system due to the thyristors' turn-off recovery current and induced shaft voltage also requires further investigation as it may cause bearing failures and appears to have caused the malfunction of some airgap sensors.
